Biography

Sara Calero was born in Madrid in 1983. She graduated with honors from the Madrid Conservatory in 2002. At the age of 17, she made her debut as a soloist under the direction of master José Granero at the Jerez Festival with the piece “La noche” as part of the show “A mi manera,” alongside renowned artists such as Lola Greco, Maribel Gallardo, María Pagés, and Beatriz Martín.

That same year, she served as choreographer for the production “Zarzuelas en Blanco y Negro” at the Teatro Romea in Murcia, and a year later, she joined the Workshop of the Compañía Andaluza de Danza.

Since then, her work as a soloist and principal dancer has developed in companies such as Antonio Márquez's, where she performed, among others, the role of La Molinera in “The Three-Cornered Hat” (El Sombrero de Tres Picos), touring major theaters worldwide.

In 2005, she participated alongside Carmen Linares in the Lucerne Festival in the show “El Círculo Mágico” with the musicians of the Eos Guitar Quartet. In 2006, she danced with the company “Ibérica de Danza,” premiering the production “Iberia Mágica” at the Teatro Albéniz, together with Eliseo Parra, Javier Paxariño, and the musicians of La Musgaña, with choreography by Manuel Segovia and Antonio Najarro.

That same year, she joined the National Ballet of Spain (Ballet Nacional de España) under the direction of José Antonio, performing principal dancer roles in choreographies such as “Seis Sonatas para la Reina de España” by Ángel Pericet, “Eritaña y Bolero de Puerta de Tierra” by Antonio El Bailarín, and “Danza y Tronío” by Mariemma. There, she worked with choreographers Fernando Romero, Antonio Canales, Nuevo Ballet Español, and José Antonio himself.

A year later, she participated in the XVII Madrid Choreographic Contest, winning the awards for Outstanding Dancer, Best Musical Composition, and the Foto Escena Award for Best Image for her creation “Camino a mí.” In 2010, she left her position at the National Ballet of Spain to embark on a personal project called “Zona Cero,” which premiered to great public and critical acclaim at the Teatro Pradillo in Madrid.

In 2012, she performed the role of Candelas alongside singer Esperanza Fernández in the work “Amor Brujo,” “Gitanerías” (1915) by Manuel de Falla, at the Palau de Les Arts in Valencia. In March 2013, she premiered her second show, “El Mirar de la Maja,” at the Teatro Real Coliseo Carlos III in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, earning the Breakthrough Artist Award at the 2014 Jerez Festival.

Simultaneously, she participated in Shoji Kojima's production titled “FATUM,” premiered at the Gran Teatro de Córdoba. On October 4, 2014, at the XVIII Bienal de Flamenco in Seville, she presented her first street performance, “La Gota.” In 2015, she premiered her show “Cosmogonía” at the Festival del 2 de Mayo of the Community of Madrid.

She began 2017 with the premiere of “Petisa Loca” at the Corral de Comedias in Alcalá de Henares. In 2018, she collaborated on the production “Scarlatti en Danza” and presented her street proposal “Fandango Street.” In 2019, she collaborated as a guest choreographer with the Compañía Ibérica de Danza for the premiere of “Fígaro” and participated in the "Africa in Dance" program in Kenya and Ethiopia.

In 2020, she premiered "Fandango Avenue." In 2021, she premiered “La Finitud” at the Teatros del Canal and the work “Mascarada” at the Museum of Romanticism. In 2024, she presented “El Renacer” and “Intangible,” and in 2025, she premiered “Taberna Femme” at the Suma Flamenca Festival.

Her career is further strengthened by projects such as “Eterno Picasso” (2022) and “Crónica del Alba.” In 2022, she participated in the Havana Star Gala with the National Ballet of Cuba. In 2023, by invitation of Joaquín de Luz, she choreographed the piece “A tu vera” for the National Dance Company (Compañía Nacional de Danza), premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
